WHY SOUTHERN NARIÑO?

Nariño is located in the west of Colombia, bordering Ecuador and the Pacific Ocean.

The southern Nariño Department is a region of Colombia where the Andes is divided into three mountain ranges. This creates a zone with a diversity of microclimates that gives coffee very specific physical and sensory attributes. Unique agroclimatic factors set apart Nariño coffee from the rest of the world – its proximity to the equator allows for more solar radiation, and the elevation (up to 2,350 meters above sea level) produces high temperatures during the day and low temperatures at night. The cold nights prevent damage from pests such as the ‘Broca’ (Hypothenemus hampei) – the biggest threat to coffee around the world – as the larva is unable to tolerate the cold. Thus, our coffee is rarely affected and our beans have outstanding uniformity.

The more than 17 municipalities in this one region have diverse conditions, allowing us to select from very different profiles to meet the needs of our clients. Farmers also play a crucial role in the quality of coffee produced in southern Nariño. With small production units, farmers devote their individual time and knowledge to all stages of production, thus yielding outstanding coffee beans. Western Nariño coffee has won first place at the Cup of Excellence competition of South Colombia in 2005, 2008, 2010, and 2012.
